Greg Lucas

Greg began his martial arts training while in college at Indiana University – Bloomington. He was a member of both the Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do clubs. In 1992 he established Lucas Martial Arts.

After achieving the rank of black belt in each, he turned his attention to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, after the advent of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, won three times by Royce Gracie. In 1994, Greg began his study of BJJ under the tutelage of Royce, his brother Rorion, and his father, Grand Master Helio Gracie. Until 2001, Greg operated an official Gracie Academy Training Association.

During his time at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California, Greg met Professor Carlos Henrique R. Elias (“Caique”), then an instructor at the academy. In 2001, Caique decided to begin an association of his own. After careful consideration, Greg decided to join Caique. Since then, Greg has been and continues to be an official representative of Caique, and is a certified instructor under the Team Caique Jiu-Jitsu Association.

A competitor by nature, Greg has competed and won many tournaments. In 1999, he won his weight and the open division of the Gracie Academy National Tournament in Southgate, Michigan. In 2000, he again won the open division, after which he was awarded his purple belt by both Royce and Caique. Also in 2000, he won the open division of the Bluegrass Open, a submission wrestling tournament held annually in Louisville, Kentucky. Later that year, in his first tournament as a purple belt, he placed 3rd in his weight division at the Relson Gracie National Championship. In 2001, he returned to the tournament and took 1st.

In the field of Mixed Martial Arts/No-Holds-Barred fighting, Greg fought Mike Haltom in April of 1999, winning by armbar in just over 3 minutes. He returned to MMA/NHB competition in 2000, facing a larger Aristides Britto, a tough fighter from Mississippi. Greg fought patiently and technically for 14 minutes, eventually securing an armbar for the victory.

Greg owns and operates Lucas Martial Arts Academy in Bedford, Indiana, as well as a member of the Bloomington Fire Department. He also teaches Self-Defense, Hap Ki Do, Tae Kwon Do, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu for the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.

Greg currently holds the rank of black belt.
